Globetrotter Legends Raise Money for Imperial Sugar

The great "Clown Prince" Meadowlark Lemon and several of his colleages, all from the Harlem Globetrotters, joined forces with Savannah Fire & Emergency Services to riase money for Imperial Sugar victims. TyRone "Hollywood" Brown, a Savannah native and Globetrotter Legend, established the event and called upon Meadowlark for help. The two ball-handlers joined with many other Globetrotters to put on a chairty basketball game that would raise needed funds and honor the first responders who mitigated the disaster on February 7, 2008.

Several Savannah firefighters, along with a number of community leaders and famous faces, took on these greatest of basketballers for a night of fun and entertainment at the Savannah Civic Center. The event raised nearly $10,000 for Imperial Sugar victims and gave firefighters & EMTs a moment of honor for their commedable efforts during a catastrophic event.

2nd Harvest Food Bank of Coastal Georgia

The 2nd Harvest Food Bank is struggling with donations this year. Recent food drives have helped, but they still don't have enough food or funding to get through the summer months. 2nd Harvest provides food and meals to needy families, children, and elderly who would otherwise not have a means to eat. Their serivces support emergency needs, soup kitchens, shelters, day cares, senior and youth programs. Savannah Firefghters recently held a department food drive to help restock the shelves of this deserving organization. Their efforts brought nonperishalbe foods and several monetary donations.

A special thanks goes out to Zimmer Orthopoedics who raised and donated $879 in honor of this food drive, and also to the Association of County Commissioners of Georgia for their $100 donation.

Operation Clean Sweep

Savannah Fire is dedicated to helping our community in every possible way. As part of a Mayoral initiative, all bureaus of the City participate in Operation Clean Sweep. Firefighters provide home safety checks, smoke detectors, and free blood pressure screenings to members of the community through this campaign.
