Ardlesy Park Carriage House Fire
Morning Blaze Destroys Carriage House
SAVANNAH, GA (January 19, 2010) – Plumes of smoke from a mid-town carriage house fire were visible from the Victorian District this morning.
Savannah Fire & Emergency Services firefighters were dispatched to 36 E. 51st St. about 9:20a.m. and arrived to find heavy smoke and flames in the carriage house behind the residence. Firefighters battled the blaze from E. 51st St. and E. 50th lane, eventually resorting to defensive tactics when the floor inside of the two-story building collapsed. Firefighters were able to gain control of the blaze and extinguish it without any other nearby structures being affected by the fire.
The carriage house sits behind the two-story brick residence between Abercorn and Bull Streets. The wood frame carriage house contained the owner’s wood working shop on the ground floor and a one bedroom apartment on the upper floor. Both were destroyed by the blaze which filled the early morning sky over Ardsley Park with thick smoke that was visible for a couple of miles in all directions. The owner of the carriage house says he observed smoke in the building and then contacted SFES when he observed flames in a downstairs window. The apartment’s tenant was not at home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported as a result of the blaze.
SFES investigators say it appears the blaze was accidental, as evidence indicates the fire originated in the ceiling of the ground floor wood working area and quickly extended to the upper floor apartment of the building.
As a safety precaution, Georgia Power personnel on scene terminated electrical service not only to the carriage house but the main house as well.
