Cloverdale Neighborhood House Fire
SAVANNAH, GA (June 23, 2009) – No one was injured today when fire erupted in a west Savannah house, causing major damage to the structure.
Savannah Fire and Emergency Services firefighters encountered heavy smoke and flames when they arrived at the Cloverdale neighborhood house at 12:50 this afternoon. Investigators say the blaze at 1406 Audubon Dr. appears to have started in a storage closet in the rear of the home’s carport and quickly spread to the interior of the house.
Although Savannah firefighters were able to extinguish the fire within a few minutes of their arrival, the flames caused extensive damage to the one story brick house and heat damage to a neighboring house at 1408 Audubon Dr., which experienced melting of the vinyl siding on the east side of the house.
One person was home at the time the fire started and was able to escape the blaze without injury however he and his family will not be able to occupy the house. The American Red Cross was on scene to assist the family.
Investigators continue their probe of the fire but a preliminary examination of the site leads officials to believe it was accidental and that the home’s electrical panel may be the culprit in this blaze.
