SFES Night Training Moves To Downtown Savannah
SAVANNAH, GA (January 11, 2010) – In an effort to bring more realism to the department’s on-going training program, Savannah firefighters will be conducting weekly night training exercises in downtown Savannah.
Beginning Tuesday, January 12th, SFES is expanding its High-Rise training opportunities to better address real life scenarios. In collaboration with PHRM Holdings, SFES will utilize the building at 2 E. Bryan St. (at Bull St.) for night training exercises throughout the first quarter of 2010.
Savannah firefighters have conducted night training exercises at the department’s training facility on Argonic Rd. However, utilizing the downtown building will enable firefighters to better address all aspects of high-rise firefighting, from dispatch to response, staging, building search and interior operations.
Firefighters will initially conduct a series of walk through exercises at the location and then will regroup at SFES headquarters (Station 3) on E. Oglethorpe Ave. From headquarters, companies will be dispatched and respond to the Bryan St. building as if it is an actual structure fire, staging their apparatus as if preparing to attack a blazing building.
The downtown aspect of the training is scheduled to begin at 7:00p.m.and last approximately two hours. Although SFES will endeavor to minimize disruption of downtown activities during the exercises, citizens are advised that traffic delays are possible in the vicinity of Johnson Square and on Drayton, Bull and Bryan Streets during the training timeframe.
This training will continue each Tuesday evening through the 2nd week in April. It also will be conducted on Wednesday, January 20th.
